As we know gaskets are seen as the most important element in sealing systems compared to flange and bolting components. All these are very important components when sealing any system from environmental influence.

This article with guide you through the main categories of gasket  materials.

Gaskets can be divided into two types, Metallic/semi-metallic and Nonmetallic gaskets.

Since  we have not had discussions about these in detail in our previous post, regarding gasket specifications, we will discuss briefly both Metallic and Non -Metallic Gaskets.

Metallic & Semi-Metallic Gaskets

Metallic or semi-metallic gaskets are made of metal or a mixture of metal and nonmetal materials.  Metallic Gaskets are used for higher quality surface sealing than

their Nonmetallic gaskets counterparts. These gaskets are a good fit for medium and high pressure applications. Metal gaskets are designed to resist extreme temperatures, pressures and chemical exposure. Offered in regular and custom configurations, these strong metal gaskets are produced in a wide range of material combination to accommodate all types of applications.

Some examples of metallic & semi-metallic gaskets are:

  • Camprofile (grooved) gaskets

  • Metal jacketed gaskets

  • Ring joints

  • Spiral wound gaskets

  • Corrugated metal gaskets

Non-Metallic Gaskets

A nonmetallic gasket uses zero metal in it composition. Nonmetallic gasket relates to a gasket material that is easily compressed under bolt load. These Non- Metallic Gasket (know as soft gasket) material can be chosen from a large variety of elastomers, compressed non-asbestos, PTFE, flexible graphite and high temperature sheet products.

Non- Metallic Gaskets are used in a large range of applications such as pipe flanges, heat exchangers, compressors, and bonnet valves. It can be bought in a variety of cut shapes or be found in sheet or rolls.

Some examples of Non-Metallic Gaskets materials are:

  • Biaxially Orientated (Filled) PTFE

  • Sheet

  • PTFE Joint Sealant

  • PTFE Envelope Gaskets

  • Flexible Graphite Sheet

  • Mica Sheet

  • Ceramic Fiber

  • Elastomeric and Fiber Sheet

  • Compressed Non-Asbestos Sheet

  • Expanded PTFE Sheet

  • Glass-Filled / Reprocessed

  • PTFE Sheet
